The Innovative Achievements on Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment Published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.

Recently, Prof. Zhang Wenfeng’s and Prof. Sun Zhijun’s team in our hospital have achieved important innovative achievements in the field of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treatment by collaborating with Prof. Zhao Xingzhong, Prof. Liu Wei, and Prof. Guo Shishang from School of Physics and Technology of Wuhan University. The relevant research results were published in an authoritative academic journal of material chemistry called Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. The title of the thesis is "Platelet-Facilitated Photothermal Therapy of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma." Dr. Rao Lang in School of Physics and Technology of Wuhan University and Dr. Bu Linlin in Department of Oral Maxillofacial-Head Neck Oncology in our hospital are the co-first authors. Prof. Sun Zhijun in our hospital and Prof. Liu Wei in School of Physics and Technology of Wuhan University are the corresponding authors of this paper.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors in the head and neck. Surgery is the main treatment, supplemented with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, in the past few decades, the survival rate and the life quality of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma have not been effectively improved. In recent years, the development of biomimetic nanotechnology provides new ideas for the treatment of tumors. The modified nanomaterials not only have tumor targeting effects, but also can play a role in the treatment of tumors.

The group innovatively utilized the platelet cells loaded with gold nanorods to target the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma tissue, and this targeting effect combined with the photothermal effect of the gold nanorods could achieve the precise treatment of the head and neck tumors. The experimental results show that this biomimetic nanomaterials can effectively escape the elimination of the immune system and inhibit the growth of the tumor. This strategy could promote the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and have clinical transformation value.

In recent years, collaborating with Prof. Liu Wei’s and Prof. Guo Shishang’s team, Prof. Sun Zhijun’s team has achieved a number of original innovations in the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment by employing the biomimetic nanomaterials modified with red cell membrane, tumor cell membrane et al. The research results were successively published in journals such as Advanced Functional Materials, Small et al. Meanwhile, The use of modified nanomaterials and microfluidic chip technology has also made some progress in the capture of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), Related research findings have been published in NanoscaleACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, etc. These cooperative studies are supported by several National Natural Science Funds, National Key Research and Development Program, Interdisciplinary Fund and Top Notch Talent Projects of Wuhan University.
