The Department of Endodontics (division 1) at Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University is the national key clinical department, which ranks the top in clinical care, scientific research and teaching in China. The department is equipped with 47 dental chairs with reception of over 70, 000 patients every year.

There are 52 faculties in the department, including 7 professors, 7 associate professors and other medical staff. All doctors possess doctoral or master's degree. The department has 4 doctoral supervisors and 5 master supervisors, and offer doctoral and master program for more than 20 postgraduates every year. There are 3 experts are awarded special allowance by the State Council, and 6 experts are members of the endodontics committee, Chinese Stomatological Association.

The Department of Endodontics (Division 1) provides clinical care of caries, pulpitis, periapical diseases, and other non-caries diseases. Other than the regular diagnosis and treatment in endodontics, the clinical care also involving in the removing the separated instruments in root canals, negotiating calcified or obstructed root canals, repairing the perforations, and performing microscopic endodontic surgery for some post-treatment endodontic diseases. In recent years, some new business including computer aided design/computer aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) chair-side immediate repair, resin minimally invasive aesthetic repair, and the digital technology application, were carried out to maximize the preservation of natural teeth and building aesthetic effect.

The faculties have created many innovative achievements and outstanding contributions.

The strength of scientific research in both clinical and basic studies locates in leading position in China. Adhering to the thinking that the scientific researches origin from clinical practice, and would return to clinical, the department actively converts scientific research achievements into clinical technology. The project “Basic and clinical study on caries and endodontic diseases” won the second prize of the state scientific and technological progress award in 2009. Each year the number of national natural science foundations approved and the number of papers published in international journals are in a leading position in domestic.
